For which visas is proof of English language proficiency required?
Skilled Worker visa:- Initial application — level B1 (according to the CEFR scale)
Innovator Founder visa:- Initial application — level B2
Fiancé(e) visa:- Initial application — level A1
Spouse, Partner, Parent visa:- Initial application — level A1
- Extension — level A2
- For permanent residency/citizenship — level B1
Children:- Initial application and extension — no proof required
- For permanent residency/citizenship (upon reaching 18 years) — level B1
Who is exempt from taking the exam?- Applicants over 65 years old
- Applicants under 18 years old
- Applicants with disabilities
- Applicants with a degree from a UK educational institution (bachelor's, master's, or doctorate) — must provide the diploma
- Applicants with a degree from another English-speaking country approved by ECCTIS (formerly UK NARIC)
All other applicants who do not fall into the specified categories are required to take the English language exam.
