As of September 2025, industry leaders, via the Startup Coalition’s open letter to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, are calling for decisive action to welcome skilled professionals and bolster the UK business ecosystem. For entrepreneurs and tech firms, this presents a golden opportunity to drive growth by tapping into a diverse, skilled talent pool. The urgency stems from a global shift in talent mobility, with the UK well-positioned to become the destination of choice for innovators.

The Startup Coalition’s letter, dated 22 September 2025, demands “bold, decisive action” to seize this moment, advocating for an expansion of the £54 million Global Talent Fund. Launched in 2025, this fund supports 60–80 top researchers in fields like digital technologies and life sciences, covering relocation and research costs over five years through UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), involving institutions like Imperial College London and Cardiff University. Scaling this initiative could attract more professionals, enhancing UK business innovation. The coalition also proposes expedited UK visa processing with personalised casework support and targeted campaigns to highlight UK opportunities.

Whitehall is reportedly considering waiving Global Talent visa fees, removing financial barriers for top talent. Additionally, updates to the Enterprise Management Incentives (EMI) tax scheme are urged to help UK businesses recruit and retain key employees through tax-efficient share options, especially with Business Asset Disposal Relief rates rising to 14% in April 2025 and 18% in 2026.Immigrants are already a driving force in UK business, with 39% of the UK’s 100 fastest-growing companies led by foreign-born founders, compared to 14.5% of the population. Companies like Synthesia, where 80% of London staff are immigrants, and Wayve exemplify this impact.

Other successes, such as Kroo (founded by Uganda-born Nazim Valimahomed) and Oddbox (led by French-Indian duo Emilie Vanpoperinghe and Deepak Ravindran), span 28 countries, showcasing the diversity fueling innovation.Recent immigration reforms, outlined in the May 2025 Immigration White Paper, tightened Skilled Worker visa rules by shortening sponsorable job lists and extending settlement periods to balance net migration and domestic training. However, techUK warns that overly restrictive policies could undermine the UK’s status as a global talent hub.

Embracing agile UK visa pathways aligns with the Industrial Strategy, boosting sectors like AI and clean energy, and addressing skills shortages.Synthesia’s co-founder Victor Riparbelli underscores the UK’s appeal, noting its openness to innovators. With a global talent pool seeking new homes, the UK can solidify its role as Europe’s innovation leader by streamlining visa processes and incentives. In conclusion, the tech sector’s call for bold immigration policies offers a transformative opportunity for UK business.

By expanding the Global Talent Fund, fast-tracking UK visa applications, and refining incentives, the government can attract world-class talent to drive economic growth.
